Interview with Jen Gordy, Group Content Lead (PvP)

What kind of play experience will Wildstar offer for the casual player?

It really depends on how you, as a casual player, want to play!
  • You have amazing quest and story content as you level on Nexus. There are also solo, story driven instances at level 50 as well.
  • Shiphand missions are amazing and will scale with the number of players participating. You can go through this repeatable content solo or get a buddy and get a scaled up experience.
  • If you’re solo or with friends (but still can’t field a full group), you can use our dungeon or adventure group finder to experience our 5-man instanced content. At level 50, you’ll be able to queue for Veteran dungeons and adventure as well!
  • If you like to PvP, we’ve made it easy for you to queue up for Battlegrounds. You can wreck your way to level cap, just through Battlegrounds play.
  • You can also dip your toes into small team PvP by queueing up for Practice Arenas, starting at level 30.
  • Housing offers modifications with challenges or expeditions (scalable instanced content) for you to enjoy as well.
  • There’s also tradeskills, runecrafting, player paths. And with that, I think I’ve talked about most of our game’s features!
  • If you’re solo casual or a play with friends casual we have a ton to offer you.

Please, please, please, can you guys add the option to put raid icons on party members in arenas/BGs/warplots? I cannot stress this enough!

The reason why we don’t have this now is because once you are pulled into a server controlled raid when you enter into the PvP instance. We would need to decide who gets this ability (we can randomly assign a player to be the “leader” of the instance raid or give the ability to everyone). So, we can work on putting this in post-launch!

Will the gear score modifier utilized to match-make lower level arenas still be in play for higher level arenas as well?

Practice Arenas only start to use gear score matching at level 50. This is because there is no rallying present in the level 50 bracket. No rallying, means no gear normalization, so the matching is to make sure that the teams are equivalently equipped for a fairer match. In the 30-49 bracket, since rallying is used, we just throw folks into the match (easy!). Rated Arenas will not use gear score, it instead uses rating to match teams up appropriately.

Can you get Elder Gems from PvP? Not points, but actual gems?

Any point where you got experience in PvP (player kills, completing matches, winning matches, objectives) at level 50 will net you elder points. We only give out whole gems through one avenue: Boom Boxes (chance). So, through PvP, you can earn your elder points, get your 75k points, and that gets converted to one gem.

With warplots suited for big guild battles with solo queued mercs sprinkled in, there doesn't seem to be an option for smaller guilds to queue and not wind up facing one another. Will there be group queue options for warplots to avoid issues like that?

Warplots are a Warparty driven feature, not guilds. You can be in both a Warparty and a Guild. We choose this type of system because we wanted an avenue for smaller guilds to band together into a Warparty to compete. So yes, you’ll be able to play if you find some brother and sister guilds to help you field a Warparty!

I just want to know if as soon as the first content patch drops will the current end game raids become useless? Or will we always have to follow progression? Is it possible for Carbine to dial back players to make older content difficult instead of solo running an old instance? I sure hope old content always remains viable, fun and challenging to run.

We will have progression for future raid content. You’ll need to be appropriately geared (and likely attuned) to get into the new content. We may do things like altering the attunement for older raid content (to make it easier to progress/catch up), but we’re looking for players to work their way up to get into the content experiences we will have post-launch.

Also will future contents be specifically aimed and tailored towards level-capped players or will they be more "spread out" - like more adventures and dungeons for the lower levels?

We definitely have an eye out for fleshing out access to 5-man content while you’re leveling up. While I can’t give firm details yet, we may initially look into this with low level adventures post-launch. Level 50 5-man content that we create will likely be geared towards Veteran difficulty.

Any chance to get a MOBA style adventure that lets us play PVP instead of against an AI character?

Our beta testers have been clamoring for A War of the Wilds style PvP battleground! We hear ya! The PvP team definitely thinks it’s pretty cool. We have a backlog of battleground maps and arena maps we’re getting to first, then we’ll likely take a look at potentially stealing some aspects of this.

Dynamic combat vectors. Will you develop these? Air combat, sea combat, space combat...hell....this game is all sorts of awesome...shrink me down and throw me inside the cells of some horrible monster, I DONT CARE...JUST DO IT!

Our imagination runs wild too! These types of things definitely interest us, but they are longer term endeavors. Right now, we’re pretty hyper focused on the combat system we’re delivering you so far, building on content around it, and launching this puppy!
